UK SPEC Incorporated Engineer Requirements

 


What is UK SPEC?

The full form of the UK SPEC is the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence and Commitment. It lets us know the requirements that a candidate has to fulfill to get themself registered as an Engineering Technician (EngTech), Chartered Engineer (CEng) or Incorporated Engineer (IEng). It also has activity examples demonstrating the competency and commitment needed.

UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence and Commitment for the Incorporated Engineer (IEng):

It is required for an Incorporated Engineer to be competent for their whole professional life, by means of their education, training and experience to the following:

A.  Utilize a combination of specialist and general engineering knowledge and understanding for the application of existing and emerging technology.

·        Maintain and extend a sound theoretical approach to the use of the practice in engineering practice.

·        Utilize a sound proof-based approach to problem-solving and pay a contribution to continuous improvement.

B.  Apply suitable practical and theoretical ways to design, manufacture, develop, commission, construct, operate, maintain and re-cycle engineering systems, processes, products and services.

·        Review, choose and identify techniques, methods and procedures to take on engineering tasks.

·        Implement design solutions and contribute to their assessment.

 

C.  Offer technical and commercial management

·        Plan for influential project implementation

·        Handle the planning, budgeting and organization of people, tasks and resources.

·        Manage constant quality improvement.

·        Handle teams and develop staff to fulfill changing technical and managerial requirements.

 

D.  Show influential interpersonal skills.

·        Have communication in English with others at every level.

·        Discuss and present proposals.

·        Show personal and social skills.


E.  Show a personal commitment to professional criteria, identifying obligations to society, the profession and the environment.

·        Be in harmony with related codes of conduct.

·        Handle and apply safe systems at work.

·        Take up engineering activities in a way that contributes to sustainable development.

·        Perform continuing professional development required to maintain and improve competency in own practice area.
