The difference Between Engineering New Zealand membership or Chartered Professional Engineer registration:

You can become a chartered engineer NZ in two ways; one via Engineering New Zealand membership is a Chartered Member (CMEngNZ) or via registration as a Chartered Professional Engineer or CPEng.

Chartered engineer NZ assessment process:

Join the community

If you are not a member, then join the community and have access to the online member area to record your work and CPD record to build your portfolio of proof to apply for Chartership. If you don’t have a desire to become a member, then you have to add your evidence on the completion of your Chartership assessment to become a Chartered professional engineer NZ or CPEng.

Prepare work and CPD records

When you join, start adding your work and CPD records so that you don’t forget the details. The benefit of adding records is that it will make it much easier for you to complete your Chartership application. Your work records work as proof of your working history and give a clear idea of the engineering activity types you execute.

Your CPD records might contain formal education, courses, conferences, workshops, Engineering New Zealand group or branch activities, volunteering or mentoring. All these things give concrete proof of your ongoing professional development and count towards Engineering New Zealand members’ requirements for the completion of 40 hours of CPD each year.

Begin to apply

If having sufficient experience to fulfill the engineering complexity needs to attain the Chartered status, you can start your application. The following is the list of activities you need to do:

1.   Give details of you and the practice fields you need to have an evaluation for, and upload the latest resume

2.   Provide two referees recommending you for Chartership

3.   Show how you fulfill the competency areas.

4.   Link related work and CPD records as proof of your eligibility

Submission of the application

On the completion of every section of your application, you need to submit it to the authority for the chartered engineer NZ assessment. The team will check whether you fulfill all the requirements required in it or not before it reaches the assessors for evaluation.

As a part of their assessment, there will an in-person session, and evaluators could give you a task to know more about your experience and knowledge. They will recommend if you should get Chartership, and after that, a Board will have a final decision.
